Buddhism in Laos
Laos has thousands of Buddhist temples, mostly very old and well preserved, many of which are located in Luang Prabang, a city declared World Heritage of Humanity and protected by UNESCO. Most of the religious life takes place around the monastic life. Laotian all must follow the ritual of the monks at least once in their life. Most children were ordered for several weeks during their youth and it is not uncommon for some men retire again for some time in monasteries and meditate in order to acquire merit. it is still true today that for some families living in remote rural areas and only have limited resources, ordination is an opportunity in education and can aspire to better living conditions.
